well, according to the counter it's been 18 weeks since I last updated. A lot has happened. My mom finished chemo on June 20th. She is presently doing fine and feeling well. She starts radiation soon which she will have for six weeks. My dad had knee surgery in February. I haven't talked to him since then. I have called a few times, but he never calls me back and I have decided to focus my efforts on my mom. After all, my mom just has Chris and I nearby and my dad has his wife, his new daughters and grandkids, new son in law and many other family members living within a five mile radius. I have decided not to waste my time with him.
I phased out of job corps last Tuesday after two years of being in there. It was sad. I had a red notebook that I took around and had a lot of people sign. I cried a lot that day. It took a awhile to load all my stuff into my mom's ford focus but we did it. I had several of my friends from Job corps help me, including my boyfriend, Dusty, whom I've been seeing since October, my friends Adrian and Chris, whom I play chess with, my roomate, Nicole, my good friend Cameron, who is phasing out soon and going to BASIC for the army, and my friend Justin, who I have known the longest, over a year and a half. As I was driving away and looked back at the last people to see me before I left, I felt a sense of accomplishment, sadness and a lot of emotions rolled into one. It's really hard to explain fully, to do it justice. Most people when they phase out of Job Corps feel such a sense of elation and joy. It's like total freedom to most of them. But for me, it was like I was leaving a significant phase of my life. Two years is a long time. I left a lot of people that I grew to love, my room, ny routine. But, I am on to bigger and better things. I guess one could say that my experience in Job Corps was positive, very positive. I learned a lot, made a lot of friends, had a lot of cool experiences. I made history in some ways. I was the first female to complete Brick Masonry. I was the first Tulsa Job Corps student to sing in the Tulsa Oratorio Chorus. In my evaluations I attained 9 platinum statuses and 3 gold statuses. I only got 1 3 on my room score during the entire time I was there, the rest were 4's and 5's. And that one 3 was due to someone ransacking my room. I was among the first group of females to join the high merit military dorm. And, I am the first job corps student from Tulsa to
join Americorps NCCC.
Bryanne Weaver, completer of Carpentry and Brick Masonry, attended Tulsa Job Corps from 6/27/06 to 6/24/08.
I leave for Americorps NCCC in five days. I fly out Tuesday morning to go to Iowa. I will be serving in Americorps NCCC for 10 months, doing many community service projects in the northern states and traveling down to the gulf coast to help out with the hurricane katrina victims. I will be staying at the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School, the same school Mary Ingalls (older sister of Laura Ingalls Wilder) attended. Wish me luck!
