Citrus bakerage...

May 24, 2010 20:02

One of my Uni friends decided to throw a casual party in light of her mum being away. She asked us to bring food. I heard an excuse to bake beckon. And bake I did.

I got a little crazy with the citrus. Here are the results:

If any of you watched MasterChef Australia last year, you will be familiar with it's winner, Julie. If you really watched MasterChef Australia, you will be familiar with the Lemon Diva cupcakes that won her the mystery box challenge. I decided to miniaturise them, as well as twist them. Twice.

Lemon Diva Cupcakes

Each cupcake is topped with buttercream of matching flavour (not just colour!).

Lime Sublime Cupcakes

I went a little heavy on the lime juice in the buttercream icing. I was worried it may be too strong, but it was quite the hit. In fact, my friends declared they'd eat a whole bowl of the buttercream (of every flavour).

Orange Clockwork Cupcakes

Each cupcake is topped with a liquorice all-sort cut into various shapes. Originally, they were all going to be cut into the citrus shape, but as well as being time consuming it was hard to do as the liquorice crumbled something awful. I think I like the variety better anyway. The sprinkles are just for the leftovers.

All together now...

Packaged for party party

And of course I just had to take some separate ones to co-op.

Mandarin Swirls

Essentially, it's mandarin flavoured shortbread with mandarin flavoured icing between.

By half way my hand was so sore from trying to squeeze the dough through the piping bag (you're supposed to use a 4cm nozzle - mine was considerably smaller) so I ended up removing the nozzle and piping circles. I think I liked the circles better anyway!
