Fashionista 13th Birthday Tier

Mar 23, 2010 19:01

When I was asked to make a birthday cake for my cousin's 13th birthday and in the same week happened upon a cupcake tier for $7, I figured the stars had aligned and it was about time to do my very first cupcake tier. Or something. When mulling over what theme she'd like, only one seemed perfect: fashion. This girl, at an annoyingly young age, loves all things fashion and 'grown up'. So it really was the way to go. Here's the result:

Now, I'm gonna own up from the onset. I used a box mix. :O

I don't really ever use box mixes because I find pride in doing things from scratch. But, with Uni assignments and the fondant alone taking a whole day, I had to save as much time as I could. The cupcakes were done using a Greens' vanilla and a butter cake mix. For no good reason. Cept that buying Greens indirectly sends money to Australia Zoo. I wanted white cakes since they'd be to be easier to colour, and was just curious to see if the two flavours would be noticeable. They weren't. The butter was died purple and the vanilla pink. Cupcakes were half of each colour and swirled with a toothpick. Icing is either pink or purple butter cream with varying trinkets and flowers. The fondant was a pain in the bum as I was using old fondant. Really shouldn't have as it was dry and cracked easily, but it got the job done to a level that satisfied the birthday girl.

Here's one after being half chomped:

Then there was this for the top of the tier. Two layers of cake: Bottom layer was purple, top was pink, joined with a layer of hot pink strawberry-flavoured cream, then covered in a layer of purple buttercream icing, then covered in pink fondant. As anally planned as that sounds, it wasn't, it was just how it turned out. The hearts cut out of fondant were equally on a whim, done with cookie cutters. The frill around the edge was the only pre-meditated part.

And now for the tier:

I left the impromptu cake board on until it was served to prevent the lack from flopping, so it's slightly unsightly.

Here's one of all 4 sides.
