Cooking at home cheaper than takeaway - taste.com.au So true. Think about it. We can spend $45 at the local Chinese take away on three dishes (including noodles) and fried rice. I can feed us for DAYS on $45. I can feed us, quite frankly, for a week (being excruciatingly frugal) on $50.
I'm quite unhappy at the way I haven't kept up with my food blog. Not having internet over the last 5 weeks has been an issue, but to be frank I hadn't kept up with it for a while before that. Not having a bit of extra cash to buy things to make good dishes to chuck up there is an issue as well.
And over to Taste.com.au we go! Here's a recipe for
Margherita pizza that costs about $4.20 for a medium pizza. That's fair enough, as long as you've got all the ingredients straight away to make it. But it can be done! And once you've got the jar of yeast, kilo or two of flour and your olive oil, you're pretty set to just get another few things to make it. (Believe it or not, I don't have oil at the moment. Sad, huh.)
I've discovered how to make a pretty darned good lentil dhal over the last month or so, and this
chicken and lentil korma is about as easy as the dhal is. Whilst the dhal might be cheaper, it's only cheaper because it doesn't have the chicken in it.
Whilst I don't like running a food budget on around $50-60/week, it can be done, and you can eat relatively well on it. I imagine people who work in the city and are used to spending $50-60/week just on lunch, would be thinking "Hmm I might put that money towards my weekly shop instead". That would be the right thing to do.
Incidentally, taste.com.au's got a little "Have Your Say" poll on the sidebar. "What's influencing your food/cooking decisions at the moment?"
Leading the way is Health & Diet @ 75%. Second is the Economic Crisis @ 19%, and Sustainability & the Environment @ 5%. I imagine that might look a bit difference than it would have a year ago.

I'm writing a series of novels on LJ at the moment. I totally forgot how much I enjoyed blogging, and putting thoughts down.
