"There Will Come Soft Rains" by Sara Teasdale

There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;
And frogs in the pool singing at night,
And wild plum trees in tremulous white;
Robins will wear their feathery fire,
Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;
And not one will know of the war, not one
Will care at last when it is done.
Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree,
If mankind perished utterly;
And Spring herself when she woke at dawn
Would scarcely know that we were gone.

So I was playing Fallout 3 for the Xbox360 and I came across an area of the game that references one of my favorite short stories of all time.  Ray Bradbury's story "There Will Come Soft Rains", which is in turn based on the poem above by Sara Teasdale.

The premise of the story is simple, sometime in the not so distant future there is a terrible and apocalyptic war.  Everyone dies.  The simple robots that we created to serve us and better our lives don't notice.  They continue to do the same thing they have always done.  Maintain themselves and their home, do the dishes, wash the laundry, read the children bedtime stories(nevermind that the children are long since dead.)  Its a very very sad and sobering story.  I had to go and find it online immediately and rereading it after find this little easter egg in one of my favorite video games.

Thats all.

In case your interested in reading it, the entire text of the story can be read here:
