Cruising the Caribbean, Part VI

December 11, 2011 - St. Lucia

20:30

Wakeup was at 06:30. Breakfast was at 07:15. Our tour met at 08:15 on the pier outside the cruise ship. While we waited, we watched the birds play. One amusing little black and yellow upside-down bird, and a hummingbird made their appearance. And I noticed that there was one kind of pink flowered tree that really attracted the little hummingbirds -- pretty little things, but hyperactive as HELL. A half hour later, we made our way to the ferry pier, and there met the boat that would take us to our snorkeling spot: a little cove between the Pitons.

I took my camera and case, but my snorkeling pictures turned out lackluster, since I had no silica beads in there, to keep the case from fogging up.

The snorkeling spot we were taken to didn't really impress me much in what the reef offered. It was very much the same as the last reef we saw in Barbados.

One of the boat's crew (a group of utterly uninhibited black guys) apparently could not believe my hair was as long as it is ("In twenty years, I ain't never seen hair dat long"), and decided he was "in love with my hair". *snort* On our return trip, he insisted on taking a picture, holding my hair up and pretending he had a beard a yard long.

Once we got back to the Constellation, we cleaned up and ate. And then went to go hunt hummingbirds with our cameras. It's annoyingly hard. Grr. By the time you spot the little buggers and then find the spot where they were in your viewfinder, the bird is gone. With a few exceptions, where they would occasionally hover in the sun long enough to be found. And then you had to be able to focus before the bird disappeared. Also difficult. About two and a half hours and 300 photos later, I have maybe five or ten good shots. Maybe 20 acceptable ones.

From there, mom and I went up to the top deck to take panoramic shots of the island, and the sunset, and to dinner. Fruit appetizer, vegetable broth with rice noodles, and shrimp scampi. Followed by an apricot custard. (And an additional raspberry nougat thing. Mmmm.)
