Title card rocked. Dude, I laughed my ass off at the title cards!
they called him Uncle Bobby YES! I had carefully kept this out of my fics only because I wasn't sure whether John was the type who would fabricate a "relationship" when there wasn't one... Pastor Jim was always "Pastor Jim" and I wasn't sure whether Bobby would have been Bobby or "Mr. Singer" - though I would have bet Bobby would have given them permission very early to call him "Bobby" because "Mr. Singer" just doesn't feel right! But UNCLE Bobby is made of win.
And looks like wee!Dean's having a moment of adolescent pique. I liked the adolescent pique for a few reasons: 1. more "Mean to Sam" moments as opposed to perfect, silent-suffering Dean who moved the earth to make everything perfect for Sam; 2. Dean's freakout is, I think, linked to his own disappointment and anticipation that John's NOT going to make it home, as well as; 3. Sam's probing and asking all the wrong questions to which Dean had no adequate answers, so he's stressing.
I thought his screaming at Sam was a wee bit over the top, though not by much. I can see him getting pissed "I've told you before, DON'T talk about Mom" but I also had thought it was more of a "Not around Dad" type of rule. Sam obviously knows things about their mother--intellectually--so at some point, I think when they were younger, Dean should have opened up a little. Not a lot! Just a tiny touch. But I think not at this moment, because, well, he's stressing over a ruined Christmas.
Gross lewd Santa! Eew! YAH, no kidding. Actually the exchange fic I got assigned over at spn_thur_nights requested a Christmas-time fic with family bonding, and I already knew, but I have no idea whether the requester knew, that we were going to be getting this episode. However, knowing what little I did know, I'm going in a totally different direction with it.... and in fact, JOHN is working as a Santa (and doesn't want either of the boys to know), and I considered the stereotypical drunk, creepy Santa as one of the other Santas, and decided against because it's SOOOO cliche.
OTOH... "He's kidding." HEE. "We're just here to watch." WHAT? Sammy, Sammy, Sammy. Did it to yourself, dude.
So that was 12 and 8? And Sam didn't officially know what was going on before then.... hunh. Um... so... hunh.
Yeah. This Josses what...? Half the fanfic out there? I knew that was coming, too. I think they should probably have been a year younger, but 8 and 12 is okay. In his interview, Krip said 9 and 13, and that's what I went in thinking they were, and that's WAY too old. Even at that, though, I was really hoping it would turn out to be a case where Sam had already half figured it out, and was pushing/poking the issue to get Dean to admit the truth. Which he did, but I was expecting/hoping for more of a, "Dude, I found Dad's journal 6 months ago. I was waiting to find out when you'd tell me." Admittedly, that's not Sam's way, though: When he figures something out, he wants the confrontation right then and there.
But I can still massage this to my private universe, in which Sam has a very good suspicion, but is looking for confirmation from his father and Dean, and finally gets it by snaking the journal and reading it. (I have also been Kripke'd on the basis of *unposted* material in which Dean takes care to make sure that wee!Sam does not rifle through John's stuff unattended, for the precise reason that he might find either Journal or anything ghost-hunting-related.)

One thing that bugs me is why the hell John didn't have the Journal with him??? He's off hunting, he should have it with him. Did Sam steal it before John left and replace it with, I dunno, some grade three textbook John's gonna pull out when he needs an emergency exorcism or something?
Like I said above, gonna need time to process the new backstory.
