The last week has been painful. Shuffling through the day without enough sleep is a struggle, but the worst part was finding the patience for Isabel's problems at the same time. Patience doesn't well from exhaustion, and neither of us has been cutting the other much slack. We haven't been enjoying each other's company very much. But then, suddenly, everything changed again. Wednesday night she slept from midnight to 6am, and then from 6am until noon. I thought it was just a lucky fluke, but she did it again Thursday night, and again last night. If I am careful nursing her at 6am, Erik is able to sleep the whole night through. We have been transformed by sleep into younger, happier, more clever people. Morning coffee is fun again.
The hours between when Erik goes to work and Isabel wakes up are wonderful. I clean the apartment, manage the budget, work on sewing, read my e-mails, have a shower, cook dinner -- whatever I want. Then when she wakes up and calls me I rush in to her and scoop her up with a big smile. I tell her how happy I am to see her and how much fun we are going to have together. She always wakes up happy and excited, and she smiles and talks to everything for a while. I get her ready for the day and usually this is when Erik gets home for lunch, and he gets to play with her before she is fussy. Every night I try to move her schedule back a few hours so we can get enough sleep and Erik can get to work earlier, but I will be sad when she finally sleeps from 10pm to 10am and I lose my mornings alone.
Today is cold, but it's a beautiful sharp day in Austin. Looking at the roof tiles on buildings in the distance, I feel like I could see for miles. It makes me think about the laser surgery I had, and wonder how it could work this well. The roof is so far, and the tiles look so tiny! Not being able to see them before still makes more sense to me than being able to see them now. Those crazy lasers!
I updated our Isabel web page with pictures from the last few weeks. It's funny to look at the earlier pictures and see how small she was. She is so long now!
