(32/365) - "Serious business"

Not long ago I thought I'd look for a few more communities since even with the number I'm in right now, only a few are actually active. I then came to discover a slew of rant communities. Fanficrants, ffrantsrants, and khfanficrants in particular. At first I thought maybe this wasn't such a bad idea, but...bleh. I was always under the impression that fanfic was a very simple thing. You have people who post stories (be they in a general fanfiction community or one with a theme) and people who read, and if one is lucky, review. But it seems as though there are a lot of little conventions, like this "triggering content" business, as well as people ready to devote a lot of time and energy to other aspects of fanfic.

Well, I don't want to drag this on too long, but I'll just say that after reading through entries from the communities and the comments that tend to follow, I'm not sure these communities are a good thing. That isn't to say that everyone there is bad, or even a significant amount, because a lot of them seem like smart people that I would certainly take very seriously outside of the context of a rant community. In any case, I don't buy the assumptions that some people seem to have about that place, namely (1) that this place is any kind of authority on fanfiction and the way things ought to be, and (2) that people being a part of these communities places them above the people they often complain about.

In other news, this should be a pretty active month. I'm doing a walk for MS again (this time bringing my Chester dog!), and this weekend I'm taking part in charity poker. The pooled buy-ins go to MS research, so the game itself is only for fun. Having said that, I'm going to destroy everyone at that table.

Lastly, I'm working on my Pokemon team in Soul Silver, and upon completion, it will be super-special-awesome.

serious business ahead, rant comms, durr, pokemon, rl
