it's too bad that he only died of a heart attack, but the metaphor still works--when Britain, France and Israel colluded to invade the Canal zone, the objective was for Britain to gain control of the canal and for Nasser to be removed somehow. This effort to do that failed miserably and gained Nasser even more popularity.
His successor, Anwar Sadat, was assassinated though. Kind of sad.
