The camping trip was amazing. I guess a mouse or something had built a nest in Stacy's car, haha. It kept overheating, and when we literally arrived at the lake house, it broke down. The mouse had chewed through her water hose. It was really easy to replace, and it meant we got to spend an extra three days at the lake house, which was great. We layed around in the sun and read books during the day, and we drank wine and read books at night. One day we walked to the local bar and met the most amazing human being named Bumper. We ate enormous cheeseburgers and drank cheap beer.
Eventually, we got on to the purpose of the trip. We decided to go to the Alleghany State Park and National Forest to do our hiking and camping. It was really weird and nostalgic for me, because when I was little, we used to take huge family and extended family trips there, and we'd rent cabins and have a huge amount of people. Everything seemed familiar. We parked our car and headed out.
I thought carrying around my backpack in Europe was tough, but this was murder. We'd walk five or six hours a day, and it wasn't easy city walking either. It was just what I needed.
I've realized life takes work. It seems like that would be common sense by now, but so often I've gotten to comfortable places in my life, and then just cruised. That's not going to work anymore. I need to keep myself busy, and keep improving. I've always believed in a balance of spirt, mind, and body. I've kept the last one busy with breaking and going to the gym, but the first two have just sort of been atrophying. This trip was the first step towards remedying that.
The lake house.
Sunset from the dock.
Panama rocks.
My enormous pack.
Even within a day, the environment would change so much.
We camped under these two trees the first night.
We refilled our drinking water here.
Driving back to Ann Arbor.
