Today I heard Fr. Andy recite this prayer during his homily. It was found on the body of an unknown Confederate Soldier during the American Civil War. I liked it. :)
I asked God for strength, that I might achieve,
I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey.
I asked God for health, that I might do greater things,
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things.
I asked for riches, that I might be happy,
I was given poverty, that I might be wise.
I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men,
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God.
I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life,
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things.
I got nothing that I asked for
- but everything I had hoped for.
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am among men, most richly blessed.
Also when my parents traveled to Europe around six or seven years ago, they went to Prague and in one of the Churches they visited my mom got a card with the image of the Infant Jesus of Prague, printed on the back is a prayer I immediately liked upon reading. It is titled the
TEENAGER PRAYER
Jesus, you were a teenager like me.
You can understand
How much I like to play and laugh,
How I yearn to get on and grow up,
To fight to change the world
(Though at times I do feel scared...).
So help me to bring peace.
Peace within me-
Do steer my thoughts and words
Towards the Good;
Peace around me-
To be like you, peaceful and loving
Towards all those who cross my ways.
Make me gentle to those
Who are bringing me up,
So that all my energies
May be guided by your divine will,
Which is our peace
And strength of all mankind.
Amen.
