But does the garlic overpower the taste of the trout? I love fresh trout and I love garlic, but I'm not sure how well the two tastes will mesh...

Very well actually (I ate the other half of the fish yesterday). The cooking actually steams the garlic and ginger which mellows the flavor and makes it not quite as sharp.

The garlic is either roast or steamed, depending on how you look at it; as a consequence, it winds up quite mellow and sweet, and actually really compliments the trout.
