"I really don't know how other women get their halls decked properly, with those short husbands of theirs," said Lily, watching as Herman effortlessly draped loops of cobweb-covered black tinsel around the edges of the room. "It must take them days."
"I think they use ladders, Aunt Lily," said Marilyn dutifully. "It's not their fault that they have short husbands. Most men are shorter than Uncle Herman."
"That doesn't mean we should be settling, dear," said Lily. "Herman! No! Don't hang tinsel on the vampire bats-" The sound of wings and screeching filled the air as she hastened off to prevent being widowed due to household accident. Again. Holiday resurrections were always so dreary.
Marilyn, being somewhat smarter than most people expected a pretty blonde with a tropism toward pink and pearls to be, took one look at the bat-based carnage unfolding in front of her and decamped to the kitchen. Better safe than exsanguinated.
Grandpa was at the stove, stirring something that smelled like turpentine and looked charmingly like radioactive swamp water. "What's that you're making?" she asked, coming up behind him and peering into the pot.
A tentacle reached out and tried to take the spoon away. Grandpa smacked it once, briskly, and replied, "Figgy pudding, just like mother used to make. You'll love it! And for dessert, I'm serving the antidote."
"You're so thoughtful," Marilyn chirped. Another tentacle whipped out of the pot. She stepped back, out of range. "Grandpa, does figgy pudding traditionally contain tentacled horrors?"
"Sure. That's his name. Figgy."
"Oh." Marilyn beamed. "We're going to have the best Christmas ever, Grandpa."
"Hopefully, the neighbors will be jealous enough to call the police on us."
Marilyn hugged him. "Just like last year."
