I slept through the banging, shoving, scuffling, and rearranging of the living room furniture. I slept through Quentin hanging tinsel all the way around the apartment, despite the fact that, as May told me later, he'd fallen off the ladder twice. I even slept through Danny showing up with pizza and Barghests in tow. I could not, however, sleep through the sound of what I initially thought was an entire bell choir starting to ring, loudly, in my living room.
Maybe it's just that I've had a hard couple of years, but I didn't pause to think about what a bell choir would be doing in my living room before rolling out of bed, grabbing the knife from my nightstand, and charging out into the hall wearing nothing but an over-sized San Francisco Zoo T-shirt and a pair of socks.
May, Quentin, and Danny turned to look at me. "Nice socks," said Danny, after a long, startled pause. Then he turned back to the bell choir, which wasn't a bell choir at all.
I lowered my knife. "May?"
"Yeah?" she said, amiably.
"Why is there a swarm of pixies in our living room?"
"They're decking the halls." A chiming pixie swooped past her head, holding a glass ball nearly as big as it was. "More specifically, they used to live in the movie theater downtown. The one that just got shut down?"
"And now they live...?"
"They're in-transit. For right now, they're decking our halls in exchange for a dry place to sleep." One of the pixies rang stridently. "Sleep, and pizza," May amended.
I hesitated, not even remotely sure what I was supposed to say to that. Finally, I went with what seemed safest: "Do they know how to hang lights?"
Quentin grinned.
