The castle's been hired and the servants been warned
And the cook has been paid more than double.
All of the tourists have been told we're closed --
We'd rather not go courting trouble.
And the raven-haired lady with skin white as snow
Swears that she's not the fairest of all...
But tonight she will go where the winter girls go:
To the lights of the fairy tale ball.
The second-string princes have all shined their shoes,
And they're hoping to meet second sisters.
Glass mountain girls who would never refuse,
Even if crystal slippers cause blisters.
And the flaxen-haired lady with dust on her hands
Sweeps the ashes up fast as they fall...
But tonight she will dance at her lover's commands
On the floor at the fairy tale ball.
And the witch with the red hair says her name is 'Rose,'
And she's long loved this story, she knows how it goes,
And her happily ever leaves nothing to chance,
For she made up the guest list, and she leads the dance.
The year's grandest gala for those who have slipped
In the spaces that stand between stories:
It's where you can go when your role has been ripped
From the seams of another tale's glories.
And the golden-haired lady laughs bright as a bell,
Says that good things are often quite small...
And she's meeting her date by the old wishing well
On the way to the fairy tale ball.
The choices and chances we make in our days
Are the things that determine our growing,
For a story can only start so many ways,
But it's hard to tell where it is going.
And the silver-haired lady who speaks not a word
They say she never dances at all...
And she's some sort of princess, or so we have heard
From the folks at the fairy tale ball.
And the witch with the red hair says her name is 'Rose,'
And she's long loved this story, she knows how it goes,
And her happily ever leaves nothing to chance,
For she made up the guest list, and she leads the dance.
And it's porridge and princesses, ballgowns and bears,
All the archetypes looking for someone who cares,
And I don't mean to tinker in fabled affairs...
But it's you that I love best of all.
If I'm ever invited
Then I'll be delighted
To take you to the fairy tale ball.
