Current projects.

Mar 06, 2008 11:58

It's been several months since the last time I did a thumbnail list of current projects, and things have changed substantially since then, so it seemed like it was about time I did it again. Largely because if helps me keep track of things, and I'm happiest when I know where I left my stuff. Please note that this is only the projects currently being either worked or researched: it's not the full list, by any stretch, so if something I've mentioned to you is missing, that doesn't mean it's been abandoned. Just slightly back-burned for the time being.

Wheeeeeee.

Lycanthropy and Other Personal Issues.
Young adult horror/drama. Clady Porter is a high school sophmore, science whiz, track team star, horror movie fan, and oh, right, teenage were-coyote. After spending sixteen years devouring Stephen King and Wes Craven, Clady has abruptly found herself right in the middle of the sort of story she'd really rather read than live. Unfortunately for her, Clady had no idea that her father wasn't human, or that she'd end up taking after his side of the family. Now she has a new state, a new school, and a new species to contend with. Not to mention the serial-killing were-bear who's haunting lycanthrope teens in her new neighborhood, or the were-wolves, who have a nasty tendency to fight first and ask questions later. This book is currently at the top of the 'what I'm actively writing' list, and the first draft should be finished sometime in the next six weeks.

Rosemary and Rue.
Fairy tale noir. This is book one in the Chronicles of October Daye, a series of mysteries set in an urban fantasy universe where faeries are real and existing, hidden, in parallel with the mortal world. Our protagonist, Toby, is a changeling knight, the daughter of a human father and a faerie mother, who has to deal with the fallout that arises when these worlds collide. Of course, first she has to handle a murder, a mad queen, the King of Cats (who hates her), and a sacred artifact that has a bad habit of getting the people who carry it killed. I'm actually getting ready to do some fairly major surgery on this book -- yes, again -- which is going to put it through another round of revisions. But I'm expecting it to be so, so worth it.

The Brightest Fell.
Fairy tale noir. Book five in the Chronicles of October Daye. I said it was a series. This one is a pretty traditional mystery, with the looming threat of a massive war sort of complicating Toby's life -- as if it weren't complicated enough already. There's not much I can openly say about this one without giving spoilers for the series to date, but I like it. This book is in the process of being written, and is probably about two-thirds of the way done. Also, if I don't finish it soon, Vixy will kill and eat me.

Newsflesh.
Horror/social commentary. Zombies. Bloggers. Political conspiracies. And the inherent value of the truth. Newsflesh is the story of Shaun and Georgia Mason, twin siblings and dedicated reporters, who decide to follow a presidential campaign across the country. Oh, did I mention that this is twenty years after the so-called 'zombie apocalypse', and that the living dead have become just another fact of life? No? Modern political horror that one proofreader described as 'Cory Doctrow meets George Romero for freaky back-alley sex'. It is my not-so-secret hope that James Gunn will someday direct the movie. This book is currently in its first round of revisions, which are proving to be amazingly productive, and extremely picky on a technical level. Made of win.

Shining Star.
Young adult comedy/drama. The sequel to Upon A Star. Meet Corey Markham. Corey Markham would really like to know whether she's met you before, as she's currently suffering from traumatic amnesia, and has completely forgotten the last two years of her life. Of course, she wants to know if she's met you largely because she wants to know if you're likely to punch her in the nose. A drama geek gone diva bitch when she landed the biggest teen-star role in Hollywood, Corey wants nothing more than to keep her amnesia, and not go back to the dark side. Corey has issues. This book is in the process of being written; I'm about two chapters in.

The Nativity of Chance.
Urban fantasy. Mathematics. Language. The Doctrine of Ethos. Pythagorean philosophy. The Order of the Golden Dawn. Genetic engineering. Predestination. Oz. Accidental earthquakes. Broccoli. This is...well, it seems to be my Tim Powers book, and it's still being researched. I now own more books on alchemy than any other living person who isn't trying to turn lead into gold.

Deathless.
Supernatural romance. I'm finally writing a supernatural romance! Of course, my main character is a zombie (living with a southern redneck vampire who maintains her babelicious figure by drinking a lot of ice cream), but who's counting? This book is in outline, with a reboot coming, because I've just had to move the primary location. Damn the luck. I've got about half of chapter one written, and I really like my characters.

The Mourning Edition.
Horror/social commentary. The sequel to Newsflesh. No details are available at this time.

I'm leaving Chasing St. Margaret and Lady of the Underground off the list because I'm not currently working on them, so that, for the moment, is our list. Whee!

writing, toby, nativity of chance, proofreading, newsflesh, upon a star, lycanthropy
