Song: Gardens.

Aug 24, 2007 11:10

My mama was a gardener on a world whose name you don't need know,
And I used to ask her, 'Mama, tell me, just how does your garden grow?'
She'd say, 'With silver bells and cockel shells and pretty maids, all in a row,
And I treat them tender, treat them kind, and I reap the fruits of what I sow.'

My mama tried to teach me all the tender tricks she could recall,
And I used to ask her, 'Mama, why do roses climb the garden wall?'
She'd say, 'They turn their faces to the sky to catch the sunlight as it falls,
Because God's a gardener too, my girl, and his plot's as big as ours is small.'

So dandelion, daisy, won't you say to me -- is this the way my life's supposed to be?
Will I put down root and live a gardener's life, or am I spacer-seed to be a starship's wife?
He loves me true, he loves me not, I know all the lessons that my mama taught,
I know how my mama's garden grows, and I'm climbing higher than a garden rose.

My mama was a lady and her court was dirt and seed and sun,
And I used to ask her, 'Mama, tell me, is your work here ever done?'
She'd say, 'Nothing's ever finished, child -- that's never been a cause to run.
We can walk the seasons 'round and 'round, ever adding to what we've begun.'

My mama never wondered why I turned my face up to the sky,
And one day I asked her, 'Mama, will you hate me if I say goodbye?'
She said, 'I planted you myself, my girl, and I always knew you'd have to fly,
Because children are like roses, and they climb because they have to try.'

My mama was a gardener on a world I haven't seen in years,
And I used to ask her, 'Mama, will your garden ever disappear?'
She said, 'I tended you as best I could, and your roots were watered with my tears,
But I know my trade and know my blood, and knew you'd not be staying here.'
