You put it on your teeth to make yourself smile bigger.

Yeah, we used it for cheerleading competitions all the time, too. Because of the disgusting taste, you did NOT want to close your lips over your teeth, forcing you to smile, or at least make a weird face similar to it.

It keeps your lips from sticking to your teeth. (You sometimes hear about it in dancing and musical theatre, too.)
