It's only professional courtesy, she tells herself; they both work with children, and they're both of them using those children as much as serving them -- using their belief. They believe in him, and so he is. They believe in her, and so she holds to a world where she's something other than what she's bound to be.

So she sets out the brandy and the treats, and tells the night, "I still believe." That's enough. For both of them.
In the distance, she can smell blood cooling on the snow.
