Day 10
In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.
Hmm...
I am the sort of person who keeps a comprehensive wish list at all times, with rankings of how much I want a thing. In fact, I keep at least six Amazon wishlists, a spreadsheet for birthday/holiday wishlists (my family all contributes to this Google Doc--we're not that big on surprises), and random wishlists at places like Sock Dreams and The Container Store. So clearly wanting things is not the difficulty here.
Although it kind of is. Partially because of our very limited budget, and partially because I am a semi-minimalist (at least I do believe in choosing to
want less rather than spend more), I use these wishlists to put my consumerism-driven overstimulated wanting on the back burner. Do I want a new cell phone? Yes! Do I need a new cell phone? Well, let's put it on the wishlist and see if it's still something I'm thinking about in a month... (For the record, no, I don't need a new cellphone, thanks to my brother who works at Microsoft. But what I do need is to change my cellphone plan for a smartphone, so if someone's willing to pay the difference in plan cost of moving to a smartphone for a year, that would be a crazy wish to have come true.)
So, here are some fannish wishes that have stuck with me long-term.
- A membership to next year's WisCon or VividCon. WisCon and VividCon are both on my life list of things I want to do and have been for a while. Someday I'll get to go.
- Fic about Leonard Cohen's "Famous Blue Raincoat". Yes, I am still obsessed with this damn song. My headcanon and ficlet about the song are available for perusal. I would be happy with any kind of fic for this song except Narrator/Thin Gypsy Thief that ignores Jane for sake of the boyslash. (I would also love gift-fic for any of my previous Yuletide requests. Hell, I love gift-fic about anything!)
- There is this category of things on my Christmas wishlist that belongs to "things that are not necessary but would make life a little bit happier." Stuff like money for PaperbackSwap or Starbucks or a Netflix subscription. A gift certificate for a class (improv? quilting? fencing?) or a restaurant (sushi? pizza? Korean/Mexican fusion?). Or tangible things like yarn (yaaaaaaaarn) or loose leaf tea or thigh-high stockings or vegetable seeds appropriate to my climate. Yes, I am sneaking all these things into my third wish--they're all the kind of small surprises that make life bright, and they kind of remind me of what it means to be in fandom. The starburst of joy at reading a good fic or watching a good vid or tentatively subscribing to a new friend's journal--or of getting a holiday card from someone who lives on the opposite side of the world.
In conclusion: don't listen to me or the wishes that spill out from the overwhelming want, want, want pounding in my blood. Just be here. Because you're all wonderful, and you're already enough.
