Thing One: Today is my birthday! birthday anniversary! (A thing my grandfather used to say, as you have one day on which you are born, and ever after you commemorate the anniversary of that event. My grandfather was a bit of a mischievous faux-pedant.) I am twenty-six, which will make 2/3 of my flist feel old. *grin*
Thing Two: Why is no one watching Brooklyn 99, or at least not talking about it? I love this show! It is to cop shows what Scrubs was to E.R. shows--short, humorous, and apt to get things right by dent of not being about SRS COP DRAMA. It's only had six episodes so far, but most of them pass the race Bechdel test (easy when over half of your starring cast is not white), and while I have not actually counted, I would wager at least half of them pass the regular Bechdel test. The relationships are cute, and I don't hate Andy Samberg in this. The ensemble is so good that Andy Samberg essentially playing comedian!Andy Samberg doesn't take over, and because the character has such a huge ego that he gets briefly embarrassed and then bounces right back, a lot of the episodes being "how Jake Peralta fucks up and everyone groans about it and makes him fix it" doesn't hit my embarrassment squick.
Also, the entire cast seems like they're having so. much. damn. FUN! It is one of those shows that I can hardly stand that it didn't exist before now: I tend to ask T. daily if there is a new episode out yet, and why there aren't already five or six seasons of back episode for me to go through when I'm down. If you have ever had any interest in cop/detective dramas, watch this show!
And now on to NaBloPoMo...
5. What show from your childhood would you love to bring back?
Right, so we've talked about how I didn't have TV as a child, right? Our TV had no reception--I think my parents bought it sans antenna on purpose, and I know that my brother and I growing up without TV was a deliberate parenting decision. We did have a VCR, and tapes from the library, so I have some passing familiarity with Ghostbusters, Square One, Sesame Street, and Wishbone. I think Wishbone would be the easiest to bring back, but I'm going to vote for...
Schoolhouse Rock. Best. Ever. Timeless, folky, catchy, and educational. There should be new Schoolhouse Rock for every generation!
6. What's your current fandom love(s) and/or ship(s)?
...
thefourthvine did it. I've been reading an excessive amount of hockey RPF, especially your typical Chicago Blackhawks' Patrick Kane/Jonathan Toews fic. I also really love Philadelphia Flyers' Claude Giroux/Danny Briere fic and Carolina Hurricanes' Eric Staal/Jeff Skinner fic. (And yes, I read a lot of Sid/Geno Pens' fic, too, but I am pickier with it.) I am sad that I got into hockey three years after Atlanta lost the Thrashers (to fucking Winnipeg...err, sorry), but we have an ECHL team that feeds into the Coyotes, and tickets are waaaaaay cheaper for minor league hockey (I know, you are all wincing at my mixed sports metaphors), so I am planning on going to games soon.
If you're curious, I did like hockey before hockey RPF fandom--I tend to like fast-paced, aggressive sports, so I've always loved watching hockey and rugby--but this has given me the push to learn about things beyond "if the puck goes in the goal, you get a point!"
Also, Brooklyn 99! ♥ ♥ ♥
The shows that I watch on a weekly basis are Arrow, Brooklyn 99, Agents of SHIELD, and Elementary. I read fic for Agents of SHIELD as sort of an offshoot of my ongoing Marvel comics fannishness, but I am Incredibly Picky about open canons that I am invested in, so I doubt I will get fic-readingly fannish about these shows until they're cancelled. (May they never be cancelled!) Yes, even though Arrow can be mindnumbingly awful and always has an over-the-top, chewing-the-emotional-scenery "CW moment"; even though the Agents of Shield technobabble is so wrong that it's distracting (dear writers: use less plausible terms, and we will be happier because we won't be screaming, "I KNOW THAT CONCEPT AND YOU'RE USING IT WRONG"). I love them all.
