Not So Much Controversial as Kind of Badly Phrased

[01] Do you have the guts to answer these questions and re-post as The Controversial Survey?
Take a wild guess, Captain I’m Posted On Livejournal. :P

[02] Would you do meth if it was legalized?
Nnno. I never get these “Would you do X if it were legal” questions. I don’t refrain from doing things because they’re illegal, I refrain from doing things because they’re bad ideas. Meth is one of the more dangerous illegal drugs out there, and I like my teeth where they are, thank you very much.

[03] Abortion: for or against it?
I’m for a woman’s right to choose. I don’t think anyone’s “for” abortion in the “woohoo, abortions!” kind of way. It’s an unpleasant, but sometimes necessary option, and that’s the cold truth of the matter.

[04] Do you think a country would fail with a female president?
What.

[05] Do you believe in the death penalty?
I think that, on the whole, the problems with innocent folks on death row far outweighs the benefits of deterrance and “fuck yeah take that you bastard” bonuses.

[06] Do you wish marijuana would be legalized already?
Nnno, not really. I do find the argument pretty obnoxious at this point, but I haven’t read anything really convincing on either side. As far as I’m concerned, the law is fine where it is.

[07] Are you for or against premarital sex?
I think that sexual compatibility is an important part of any relationship, and it’s kind of irresponsible to leave such a vital part of your life with your partner until AFTER you sign on the dotted line. Er, so to speak. That being said, it’s equally important to make sure that both people involved are mature, consenting adults - nobody’s saying underage canoodling is a good idea.

[08] Do you believe in God?
No. I don’t believe in the concept of an all-seeing, all-knowing, all-loving incarnation of the universe. Because what I’ve seen of the universe seems to be without intent, without guidance. That doesn’t make it any less amazing -- I would argue it makes things even MORE incredible -- but if we’re talking about factual basis and evidence for God, I just don’t see it.

[09] Do you think same sex marriage should be legalized?
Of course. Again, if we’re going by evidence, I don’t see any reason for withholding these rights. The only real arguments I’ve heard from the groups against it have been along the lines of “it’s icky” or “it’s against my religion,” neither of which hold up in court.

[10] Do you think it's wrong that so many Hispanics are illegally moving to the USA?
The problem I have with this subject is that it always seems to come down to race. It’s such a tiresome and depressingly well-worn cliche -- group emigrates to the States, group reaches critical mass at which point it develops enemies in the Idiot’s Press, group holds on despite moronic ravings of xenophobic twits, ten years later the group has integrated into society and nobody cares anymore. It happened to the Irish, it happened to the Chinese, it happened to the Germans, and now it’s happening to the Hispanics. Long story short, it’s unfortunate that our immigration laws have made it so difficult and costly for people to get here legally, but in ten years, twenty years time, nobody will care anymore.

[11] A twelve year old girl has a baby, should she keep it?
Nnngh, these situations depend far too much on individual circumstances to make a snap judgment on it. What is the girl’s family situation? Will she have help, or does no one care? How is her health? Will having this child endanger her life? Will it endanger her psychologically? Does she want to have it? Do her parents? As a random hypothetical observer, it’s not really my decision to make.

[12] Should the alcohol age be lowered to eighteen?
People already have trouble not being idiots with alcohol at 21. I’d say no.

[13] Should the war in Iraq be called off?
Heh, the problem here is, you can’t just throw up your hands and go, “Okay guys, it’s over!” That doesn’t work. We’ve got what seems to be a pretty decent exit strategy going right now, and although I’m skeptical how well this new country is going to hold together, we now have most of our people out of there. That’s as close as we’re gonna get to “called off.”

[14] Assisted suicide is illegal: do you agree?
Again, it’s such a personal decision that I have difficulty speaking to it. On the whole, though, I’d like to think that I have the right to decide for myself when my life ends.

[15] Do you believe in spanking your children?
I believe that sometimes corporal punishment is necessary. What I don’t believe in is taking it lightly. You don’t just haul off and smack a kid because they stole a cookie from the jar, or because they won’t sit down and be quiet.

[16] Would you burn an American flag for a million dollars?
I’d do it for free if the reason was just. And on the whole, greed doesn’t sound like a just cause.

[17] Who do you think would have made a better president? McCain or Obama?
I voted for Obama because I agree more with the Democratic platform than the Republican one. For my personal opinions and attitude towards where I think this country should go, Obama was the better choice. And given McCain’s constantly shifting, “oh god please don’t let me be voted out of office at my time of life” positions, I still think I made the better choice.

[18] Are you afraid others will judge you from reading some of your answers?
“Judge” me? Pfft. People judge each other every day, practically all the time. Nothing wrong with that. Keeps us from getting too close to people who don’t have our best interests at heart. Besides, most of the folks on my friends list know at least in a general sense how I’d answer these questions. :P
