I read another book! My God, that's ... 3 in a month! You'd think I was all caught up on my housework or something...
Lilith Saintcrow's Working for the Devil
Dante Valentine's world once was our own; then came the Awakening, and demons, and magic, and everything changed. That was many many years ago, however, and Danny's life was pretty normal for a Necromance: advanced weaponry and ancient ritual, LL Bean and embedded emeralds. One day a Lord of Hell calling himself Jaf knocked on her door with a gun and an unlooked-for invitation, and Danny found herself paying a business call on the Prince of Hell himself.
Seems a few decades ago Lucifer allowed a minor demon to decamp to the mortal world as a reward for services rendered. At the time, though, he didn't realize this demon decamped with the Egg, the one thing that allowed Lucifer to rule Hell uncontested. Lucifer wants the demon back -- or dead -- and he wants Danny to do it for him. She is given the services of Jaf until the deed is done and the Egg passes into Jaf's protection to take back to Hell.
Simple job. Except Danny's met this minor demon before when he nearly killed her and then sucked the life out of her first love. Nothing like a little motivation.
I really liked this book. It's not as dense as some, but the characters and plot are great and it makes a good fast read. (I read it in one sitting.) She's up to 3 or 4 books in the Dante Valentine series and I'm looking forward to them.
