Alcoholism is big with law enforcement. Do you drink? Alot? Are you an alcoholic? Why? What parts of the job are connected to it? Or is it all personal? Talk about it!
Do I drink? Sure I do, everyone does. You have a tough day you go out with friends and you knock a few back. That's the name of the game, and sure it might be self medicating but honestly, name one indulgence that isn't. Some people go home and stare at a TV, or bust their ass at the gym. Deep down, it's all the same, you are trying to escape from something you don't want to deal with, you don't want to face.
A few drinks at the bar every once and awhile isn't going to kill anyone, in fact I would go so far as to say it's healthy. Getting out with co-workers and unwinding can be just what someone needs. Alcohol generally lets people let their guard down and be more inclined to talk, at least that's how it is with me. Everyone wants us to talk, right? All those shrinks the brass makes us sit down with so we are still "fit for duty."
So when the perp who's as guilty as sin gets off on a technicality, or you see a person wasting away in front of you - and there is nothing you can do to help them, you go out and you have a drink. You sit a bar and let all that roll off your shoulders, because you shouldn't dwell on everything you can't change. That's what kills you in the end.
Do I drink a lot, am I an alcoholic? Yeah, that's none of your god damned business.
