I've been back at work this week. While I do love being a middle school librarian, dealing with all the new science textbooks has been a blah way to start the year.
But today as I was driving to pick up the kids from their playdate, I saw a huge plume of smoke at the top of our neighborhood. Helicopters and air tankers flying through the air. It made my heart speed up. I knew that it wasn't near our house, but this is California and I can't think of the last time it rained.
The air was smoke-filled with pieces of ash swirling down at my friend's house where the kids were. I helped her round up her cats and we headed to my house, which was farther away from the fire and close to the exit road of our neighborhood.
After a few worrisome hours, it looks like the fire is contained and while the fire came within a quarter mile of our subdivison, no houses caught fire.
Phew.
I love firefighters.
