Thor: the Dark World

So, I went to see it this morning. Really impressed, in general, in all the ways I wasn't impressed by Iron Man 3.

The necessary characters had their moments to shine. The mortals and Asgardians alike had parts to play. There were still ties and references to New York, to keep things fit together. The scenery was as good as the first one, and we see more of the multiple worlds.
The further development of the history of Asgard, its mix of tech levels, and the cosmic sphere in general were well done. A nice little scene at the end to lead into Guardians of the Galaxy, too.

Tom Hiddleston /gets/ Loki. He took every moment he was given, took it, ran with it, and then made the people around him better in the process.

I was glad to see that the catering-to-the-female fanbase continued. Passes the Bechdel test with flying colors, shots of Hemmesworth sans-shirt, and some geek-guy appreciation moments with Hiddleston. Does nothing for me, but doesn't hurt my interest, and I'm glad to see that someone figured out that, while its not the highest rated of the Marvel movies, the Thor franchise has more female fans than anything else they've done.

If there was a disappointment, I think it might have been Anthony Hopkins. I mean, by merit of being Anthony Hopkins, he was better than most people's best days -- but instead of showing up and acting the hell out of his part, he kind of showed up and acted. It wasn't bad, per se - just not what he could have done, given the events of the movie.

They definitely realized the scope and power levels they could play with in using Thor set-up, and ran with it, which was nice to see as well. Kurse was, by necessity, a totally different origin - and it worked. Likewise, when they give Malakeith massive cosmic power, they don't fool around.

Easily an A grade movie in my opinion.

And for Kaylin's benefit - my god, the boats. Kaylin has to be taken just for the scene with the boats.
