Movie Review: Despicable Me 2

The creators of Despicable Me have definitely figured out that the Minions were a big selling point. They have a much heavier role this time around - and that's not a bad thing. They provide a lot of really cute/funny moments, especially near the end (and they help the credits along too. But that was expected.)
The characters are pretty much exactly what you've probably seen in the previews. Kristen Wiig's character isn't a bad contrast to Gru, and the girls definitely get some added personality moments, but the minions steal the show.

Its a bit lighter on actual plot than the first one. Partly to leave more room for, well, Minions, but it has a very similar heart, a fair number of genuinely funny moments (and some that try to be, and seemed to appeal to the little kids around, so hit their target audience, while having other stuff for the bigger kids.) It tried too hard every now and then, typical of a sequel, but it was a worthy addition, mostly just on cute.

Absolutely worth a matinee, even worth full price if you just want a light, fun movie. Be prepared to be craving Mexican food afterwards. I was.
