Notes: So okay, as long as I'm shamelessly treading the J2 tropes, I kind of have to write mistletoe!fic. I feel compelled to note that this AU has fictional in-laws, just in case anyone's put off by the fact that I don't know Josh Ackles's wife's name or something.

Jared's barely out of the airport before Jensen texts him.

be here at 6. you're helping decorate.

Oh am I? he shoots back. There's a huge grin on his face.

cookies is all the reply he gets.

He texts back instantly. Deal.

Jared's family usually does a pretty quiet Christmas, just him and his brother and sister at his parents' place, with the addition of Jeff's girlfriend this year. Church and presents and dinner on Christmas day; nothing too elaborate.

Christmas eve, though, there's always the Ackles party. Family, extended family, friends, kids, everyone who can fit in the house. It's a decent-sized house; it fits a lot of people. Jared's basically counted as "family" since he and Jensen became best friends in sophomore year of high school, and he hasn't missed a Christmas eve since.

After he's dumped his stuff in his old bedroom and let his mother make him a sandwich, he puts his jacket back on.

"Mom, I'm heading to Jensen's," he calls. She pops her head out of the living room.

"Already?"

"Apparently I'm helping decorate," Jared explains.

"Ah." His mother grins. "I guess you are, then. Have fun."

"Thanks. You're coming later, right?"

"We'll be there," she confirms.

The Ackles' house is done up in lights with reindeer on the lawn. A Christmas with insufficient decorations would be some kind of travesty in their book. Jared lets himself in the wreath-bedecked front door; the first person he runs into is Jensen's sister-in-law as she crosses the front hall carrying evergreen boughs.

"Carolyn!" He engulfs her in a hug, branches and all. "How are you doing? Jensen said you had your baby?"

"Yeah, about a month ago, surprised us all." She pulls back looking pleased. "We're great. Maddie's still tiny but she's growing like a weed."

"Where is she? Can I meet her?"

"I think Jensen has her in the den."

Jared heads further back into the house in search of Jensen and the baby. Jensen's little sister is just setting up a ladder in one side of the archway to the den.

"Hey, I'm walkin' here, I'm walkin' here!" Jared says, fake-indignant. Mackenzie flips him off with a grin and starts up the ladder.

"Merry Christmas to you, too," she tosses down airily.

"Is that Jared?" Jensen appears on the other side of the archway, a bundle of pale yellow flannelette cradled in his arms.

"Is that Maddie?" Jared demands, starting forward eagerly.

"Yeah, man, come say hi," Jensen says, and meets him in the archway, holding the baby so Jared can see her. She's haphazardly wrapped in a little yellow blanket; one leg is kicking out, fidgeting, and she's looking around with interest. Her eyes are wide open and so, so blue.

"Hey, Madison," says Jared softly, reaching out to stroke a finger over one tiny palm. She grabs on instantly, hanging on like a vise. "Hey, baby girl. Look how strong you are." He's crooning and grinning like an idiot and he doesn't even care.

"Looks like Uncle Jared's gone for you already, huh, sweetheart?" Jensen's voice is tender, so unlike his usual mildly sarcastic drawl that Jared has to look away from the baby for a moment. The affection on Jensen's face is breathtaking, all of it totally focused on his niece until he looks up at Jared with this soft happy smile. "Hey," he says in the same tone, and Jared's heart flips over.

"Hey," he breathes. "It's good to see you."

"You too, man. 'S been way too long."

"Tell me about it."

There's a clatter as Mackenzie starts back down the ladder.

"I hate to interrupt," she says, "but y'all might want to take note of the new decor."

Jared glances around, eyebrows raised, and Mackenzie nods toward the top of the archway, where she apparently just finished hanging-

"Mistletoe," says Jensen blankly. "Huh."

"You can thank me later," she says, then folds up the ladder and carries it away.

Jared looks at Jensen. There's a flush rising in his face, pink-stained backdrop for the freckles, and it doesn't actually come as a surprise to Jared that he really wants to kiss Jensen.

He also wants things to not be awkward with his best friend. So he says, "We don't have to if you don't want to."

Jensen says, "I know," and tilts his face up, pulling Maddie more securely toward his body so that she doesn't get jostled when Jared steps in a little closer and takes Jensen's face in his hands. Jensen's eyes drop closed and Jared, leaning in, almost loses his nerve, but it would be the most ridiculous thing in the world if he backed out now, said no to this.

Their lips touch, and there's a breath of hesitation before it turns into a real kiss. Jensen curls one arm around Jared's neck to pull him closer, the baby still securely between them in his other arm, and Jared feels like he's floating. It's not a deep kiss, just bare hints of tongue creeping out to taste one another, at once careful and dreamlike. Jensen's lips are soft and full under the peppermint chapstick he uses. They kiss slowly, deliberately, like it matters, and Jared could do this for days.

Maddie lets out an abrupt little noise and kicks Jared in the sternum. It's enough to break them apart, both laughing a little. Jensen's eyes open slowly, and he's got this foggy, slightly dazed look to him. He's still flushed, his lips reddened and plumped even fuller, and Jared wants to kiss him all the time now.

"Please tell me that wasn't a one-off," he says.

Jensen grins and shakes his head, looking incredulous and so happy. "Not on your life." He leans back in and gives Jared another quick kiss, then pulls back and says, "Let me give this kid back to her mom before one of us drops her."

"So," says Jared, trailing after Jensen, "from where I'm standing it looks like the decoration's mostly done."

"It does kind of look that way, doesn't it?" Jensen agrees. They find Carolyn in the kitchen with Mackenzie, who looks smug. "Carolyn, please take your daughter back. I need to go make out with Jared."

"Oh my god, finally," she whoops, happily accepting the transfer from Jensen.

"Why do I feel like there's been some kind of conspiracy here?" Jensen demands.

"Because there was. You were driving us crazy with your oblivion," Mackenzie says. "We were starting to think you'd never figure it out on your own." Jared opens his mouth to protest, but she cuts him off. "Nuh-uh. You guys have totally been dancing around this for years. You don't get to argue."

He turns helplessly to Jensen, who's watching him with fond exasperation. "You know there's better things we could be doing right now than arguing with my sister, yeah?"

Jared snaps back to the point. "Um. Yeah."

"So come on." Jensen grabs his hand and all but drags him upstairs to his bedroom.

This is basically Jared's best Christmas eve ever.
