Kevin brought back snow for Ryan.
He ran right to Kevin when he walked in, and wrapped himself around his legs, both of his tiny feet pushing for a space on Kevin's larger ones. He tugs at pockets to make himself taller, and if you grab both of his hands, he'll use his legs to climb right up your body until he nearly flips over.
I took the cooler from Kevin's hands so he could scoop Ryan up. We had joked he should bring snow back for Ryan but I didn't actually think he would do it. I was gleefully surprised when I opened the cooler and it was packed full of snow.
I put it on the kitchen floor and Ryan's curiousity pulled him out of Kevin's arms and onto the floor. He reached out tentatively and touched the snow. Within moments his fingers were red and he dropped the piece of snow that he was holding and pointed down to the cooler, "co". It's his version of cold. Ryan's never seen snow. He's never touched it and together Kevin, and I taught him how to wrap his little mouth around the word.
It only took a few more minutes for Ryan's curiousity to step in again and he picked up more snow, throwing it across the room in a flutter of flakes. Kevin sat down behind him and showed him how to pack the snow into tiny snowballs and throw them at me. They made a little snowman and put him on the kitchen table. He melted after an hour or so and Ryan watched as the snowman grew smaller and smaller.
Snowcones finished the afternoon, and Kevin stayed and helped me cook dinner. We talked a little. Mostly about Sundance, some about a shared past, a lot about Ryan and the things I want for him.
He says he'll stop by again as soon as he can. I know it'll be in the next few days or so. He's good like that and he loves Ryan so fiercely.
He brought him snow. Something so insignificant, just a little cooler filled with snow meant so much to me and made a memory for Ryan. Kevin's been a part of a first and I think we're both glad that he has.
