ciao from venice. this place has been absolutely amazing and beatiful! i feel like ive been whisked away and planted onto a movie set. i dont have time to go into all the details but i want to share one of my favorite experiences in europe thus far.

yesterday when shira was touring the jewish ghetto i was sitting on a bench journaling. a little old italian man came and sat next to me and although neither of us spoke the others language we "talked" for about a half hour. we just communicated the whole time through body language and what little words we did know. i told him i was from chicago and that i had been studying in england and he said something about beer and pubs and no vino, but vino was in italy. my favorite part was when i told him that my family was from italy, my "nonas" family. he asked what part and i told him calabria and he smiled and said "ah, calabria, mafia...chicago" so i guess ive been connected to the italian mafia since day one! the best part of the whole experience was he then pointed to my eyes and said "calabria, not american" meaning i had italian eyes. im pretty sure thats the best compliment ive ever received in my entire life. i was so touched i started tearing up. he asked me if i wanted to join him for a beer but i had to wait for shira so he shook my hand, said goodbye in a few different languages, kissed me on both cheeks and went on his way. that memory will stick with me always and has made venice that much more special to me.

today shira and i basically laid on the beach all afternoon, such lives we lead. well off to get gelato! i miss you all and will talk to you soon!

ciao!
