So I ran across a pretty useful program a week or two ago for backing up data called Mozy. Basically the client sits resident in your system tray, and encrypts and backs up whatever data you pick to a remote server that you can get it back from later if you want/need. The free version starts with a 2.0 GB maximum, which really is a lot of documents and stuff. However, if you want to sign up I suggest you hit the referral link below which will get you an extra 256 MB on your quota (incidentally, I get the same amount tacked onto my quota for every referral as well). One of my fav parts about the program is that you can tell the client to upload the changes to your backup whenever the computer is idle, as opposed to sometime overnight when you might want to turn the computer off.
The only cost that they'll send an advertising newsletter to the email addy you sign up with once a week, but it's very easy to filter out if you want to.
