I can't figure out if this is a good or a bad thing.

I finally dove into Civ4 last night, and rather appropriately, I was up until 4 a.m. playing.

I was intimidated earlier by the need for multiple tech advances in order to build terrain improvement to then access the resources on a tile. I'm thinking a chart with tech advance + terrain improvement = resource could be helpful. I'll either make one or probably find one on civfanatics or apolyton.

I left my tech tree at work so I didn't have that handy, so I relied heavily on the tooltips. Tonight I'm definitely bringing it home.

I started off on Chieftain but wound up a good 500+ points ahead of the others (I'd met) so I retired and started a new game. Realized that hovering over game levels had some tips, so I jumped up to Noble. Those bastards are aggressive, aren't they? I kept getting declared on. Note to self: definitely build defense first.

So, these are my random questions for the players out there: Are you builders? What are your favorite leaders? I found myself sticking to Louis IX (France) and Frederick the Great (Germany) but wondered if anyone had better ideas. It feels bizarre to me to play a culture-heavy strat with France and Germany when I normally played Babylon/Sumeria/Celts.

Can I get away with absolutely no war?

Do you pretty much build cottages where nothing else will work?

What's this about pillaging? Can you pillage your own stuff? Isn't that a little useless? I've never had all that much problem with money...

etc.
