I picked up Royal Assassin when I visited my parents' on Christmas, clearing away one obstacle from my rereading Assassin's Apprentice. I knew that if the book was as good as I remember it being, I'd want to leap straight into the second as soon as I finished.
I was also afraid, though, that it wouldn't be as good, thereby destroying another of my favorites in a rush of maturity and taste. Thankfully, I'm just as caught up in it as I was the first time around.
How I know: I mumble to myself when I read, mouthing lines of dialogue, nodding or shaking my head when a character does. My ex used to say watching me read was one of the funniest things ever. I wonder if I'll ever feel so comfortable around someone else again, to lounge around and lose myself in a book with another person around.
I'm just tickled by the Fool, I vaguely remember that he's totally awesome. He's what every Fool should aspire to be. I also remember him telling Fitz something in his room one night, and something about a fire, and Molly. No one spoil, it's been nearly 10 years since I read these two books.
I'm aware there's a third, but for some reason I never read it. I think it hadn't been published after I raced through Royal Assassin and by the time it did come out it was so long between the second and third I never bothered. I also recall some kind of dissatisfaction with the end of the second.
Tentative plan for tomorrow is to get to the used bookstore back on Shady Grove. The library doesn't have the John Carter of Mars books, nor a significant amount of Harry Harrison. The Book Alcove is a treasure chest of old fantasy/scifi for half the marked price, and you can find really old editions to cut down the final cost. I could get them from the amazon.com marketplace, but with shipping and handling the total racks up. The hour-long trip (metro + bus) will yield more bang for my buck than scrounging around online.
Unfortunately, it does happen to be 2:30 in the morning so I might scrap that plan for Thursday. I'm only 200 or so pages into Assassain's Apprentice and Royal Assassin is close to 600... but anyone who thinks I can't finish both these books by late tomorrow night doesn't know me. I'm quite capable of spending the next x amount of hours with no sleep and lost in escapism.
Good thing I don't have to be at work until January 3.
