Behind the hotel

One thing that really impressed me was how the Katrina Hurricane disaster had made an impression on the so called "regular dudes" that I brushed across in India. Mostly taxi drivers, bus stop chatters, train friends, were really shocked at the Katrina events they had watched unfold on television. It made me believe, the world was watching, on small televisions everywhere, because small televisions are everywhere now. Even in shacks in the remotest regions of the smallest towns, there is a TV playing Baywatch and The News. I had this conversation, and a number like it everywhere I went.

at the bus stand

A taxi driver said, "We watched the Katrina effect on televison. It was just awful..." He paused and then asked, "You have poor people in the United States? Poor Americans?"
I could only look at him, and shake my head, and say, "Yes."
He continued, "Then its true, you do have poor people in the United States and you treat them terribly."

"Yeah," I said. "There's lots of poor people in the United States, Americans."
He looked at me, as what I confirmed for him sunk in. "We saw it all on television. It was terrible."
And I didn't say anything, because images were running through my head. The same images, I could tell, were running though his eyes.

on the road

Without word, he held a finger up in front of him and held it there. That pose when you have so many questions, and you can't choose which to ask...
