So apparently one of the features of the new Star Trek series Star Trek Discovery is the Federation Romulan War that is mentioned in the original series episode "Balance of Terror."
The producer says that the war is a touchstone for the new series.
We already know that the new series takes place ten years after the events from the series Enterprise (Captain Archer) and before the events from the original series.
This would put Discovery in a period right after the Romulan War as the Federation is recovering.
You may recall that the Romulan war with the Federation left deep wounds, with sons and daughters of war veterans haunted by what happened. This should even be felt greater during Star Trek Discovery, with a crew probably more cautious about stepping on the toes of alien species they encounter and also quite suspicious. There will also be hurt and discomfort from anything remotely suggesting the Romulan empire, although at this point no one should know what a Romulan even looks like.
The main character is not a captain but a first officer, referred to as Number One. Number One is played by a woman. This could be a ship that just lost its captain and yet must go on with its mission. We'll see.
The timeline is set in the "prime" universe, that is the timeline unaffected by the Romulan ship that went back in time to destroy Vulcan.
