Folks in Eastern Oregon think one stretch of road on State Highway 27 is a good one for bicyclists.
They want it to become an Oregon State Scenic Byway...for both bicyclists and motorized vehicles.
All the designation does is add signs and recognition in state travel documents.
But the route itself is already there, so might as well do it some day regardless of a designation.
Prineville is just east of Redmond and Highway 27 is off the beaten path, joining with Highway 20 south of Bend.
Here is a Google map of the region. According to an article announcing the application for Byway status:
"Crooked River Park on the south end of Prineville and run 20 miles on Highway 27 along the Crooked River to the Powder House Cove day-use recreation area on the Prineville Reservoir. Both anchors on the route - the start and finish - have ample parking, bathrooms and drinking water.
The scenic driving route...would start at the Bowman Museum in downtown Prineville and traverse the same stretch of Highway 27 as the bikeway but continue south all the way to U.S. Highway 20, approximately 45 miles."
