Drainage

When we had a landscaper work on our lot back in 2012 constructed a 4 inch pipe one foot above another 4-inch pipe that was already doing the work. Not sure why he did that.

For this latest drainage work I tied into the 2012 line, but while excavating the new drainage discovered a deeper pipe. I already pulled out the flexible leaky pipe which was connected to a 4 inch pvc pipe. Today I dug out the pipe and discovered it is connected to a turn fitting that runs under the 2012 line! How will I remove it? I will sleep on it and work on that tomorrow. I think I need to digout the area around the turn, then use the sawzall to cut off the pipe. I should then be able to pull out each section. Now where is that sawzall?

Finally got down to the base for the drainage ditch. It is 32 inches below the ground level. There was no landscape fabric separating the rocks from the ground.

At 32 inches we need 18 inches of rock, so above that rock will sit the 4 inch pipe. 18+4 = 22. That means there is only 10 inches of top soil above that. Not good enough! Grass will die and weeds will invade above this trench!

I also need to get all the rocks (mostly gravel) out of the entire trench to excavate it. I can't hold back the rocks over half of the trench. I started a rock pile. I used some of the gravel to fill a depression in our alley. I am thinking of extracting the turf by our fence and replacing it with gravel. I will put the turf at the end of the drive way.

Also put some gravel in the driveway to house70. Sebastian helped me rake and tamp the two areas: by the pathway to the driveway from the house and at the edge of the sidewalk.

At 5:30 p.m. I stopped, exhausted and hungry.

Once I get all the gravel and the secondary pipe out of the ground we will be much better off. Then I can dig deeper. Two inches. A foot beyond that. Two feet? Three feet. If I can get to 3 feet, I will stop there, put the scribing and landscape fabric in, then drop 18 inches of river rock.

My tools sitting on the siding scrape away the paint easily. So I will be painting again. That was too easy to damage.

I did finish one thing: I filled in the area by the north corner and removed the plywood. Also: scraped dirt off bricks at the end of the driveway.

Tomorrow--
* remove the pipe.
* remove more gravel (can I finish pulling all gravel out of the hole? We shall see).
* remove grass from alley and replace with gravel.
* back up the truck and scrape, sweep area there. Sweep entire driveway.
