The weekend approaches

Dec 15, 2023 20:24

To prepare for this weekend I got dressed and went to Ace Hardware.

I purchased a door knob identical to the one at our new back door for the entrance to the cellar. Once I have it installed I can go back and get keys made. It is lockable, although I don't know when we will actually need to lock it.

Also purchased insulating foam for exterior use, silicon sealant and two feet by 3 feet of thick vinyl. The idea for this: cut 3 inch holes that precisely match the outside diameter of the drainage pipes, trim the top to match the distance from the hole to the top of the silt basin, cut out extra plastic bits from around the openings, remove the pipe. Glue one piece on the exterior. Put in the pipe. Put in foam around the pipe, but be very cautious--the idea is to fill the gaps but not very deep. Possibly sand down the fill. glue another vinyl hole piece on the inside of the basin around the pipe. Add silicon sealant around the patch and the pipe on both sides. Repeat for the other pipe hole. Add rubber tape on the outside for good measure.

I got this other stuff to take advantage of the Ace Hardware $5 off, otherwise I might have waited.

Once back home I took some pictures. The carpenters today upwrapped the newel posts so they acclimate, one in the basement, one on the first floor. They have the hardware to secure the posts...a screw up the inside center of the post and one down into the floor. The tightening appears to be on a nut in the post which is hidden by a circular stop. When tightened the stop is glued in and sanded. It is good to know how it is done, but I don't see any reason to remove at least the one at the top.

Reed says the knee wall is too short to be used to easily attach the railing because it is 36 inches tall, but he has an idea how to grow it enough so that the rail can attach correctly for the guard rail.

It is likely sometime in the future I will replace the fir piece used in the passthrough with two bull nose pieces cemented together: it looks weird to have a piece of wood just sitting in the middle.

The silver alumnium threshold doesn't quite reach and also is the wrong color. I found a gold threshold which I think I will put in later.

I noticed the front door has many scuffs already toward the bottom. So it is begging for a kick plate and I found a gold one for that. Again: later!

The process of staining and protecting the treads and the areas around the windows is an arduous one. I did a little research on how to do it. So, I may not do a great job, but it should be ok.

There is a this indent in the wall above the cellar door. I think I will put a fir bullnose piece there as well, however, when I do I will stain and protect it first!

In the morning tomorrow I will go to the Post Office...I hope right at 6 a.m. to claim my glass slides for The Sea Hawk. Then back for breakfast, then add the door knob and do a little cleaning. I will also go outside and scout for any bullnose pieces. There was one standing against the door, but the carpenters could have plans for any or all pieces inside the house. Outside, however, seems fair game.

The siding keeps falling down for some reason. So I will try again to secure it!

I can't do anything with the north outside corner fill: the tents are dominating that space, so forget that idea!

Around 10:30 or so I will prepare for lunch, have lunch, then put on my scrungy boots and get to digging. I will take pictures of the flashing. If they didn't do both sides I will observe what they did and repeat it myself on the north side. Later.

After it gets dark, at 5 p.m. (!) I will come inside and take my weekly shower.

Sunday, I will do some clean-up inside the backroom (floor tile stowed) after breakfast, coffee, CBS Sunday Morning, then lunch and return to more digging.
