Update

I should update moer often. GPRF was fun and interestingly, the crowds which attend have a majority who have never attended.  This means that I'm constantly meeting new folks who haven't seen me.  This last weekend I got my first time to play with the humans in Tulsa.  It was at the Martin Regional Library and I was surprised at the number of ( Read more... )

Sounds like you are getting out to many different places. Enjoy and have a lot of fun, besides the work you need to do!

Sorry about the female bear that was killed prematurely. I'm hoping you will finally get the message across to them. Maybe you should try to visit Woolaroc. That might be a good place to start spreading the word?

Mainly I try to spread the word where there are bears. Wollaroc has several mounted ones and Phillips was an avid hunter. There are only a few bears in Osage County, in this county we have a few as well, most counties east of the Arkansas River have some sort of bear population.
They'e taken 14 so far according to the official bear hunters line where those who hunt bears are supposed to call each day. This says nothing about any wounded bear that may have been hit with an arrow but escaped, those aren't reported.
Rifle hunters are going to be upset because the Archers have nearly maked the quota. This is one of the reasons a quota hunt doesn't work, as the first baer that is seen by the hunter, is killed, generally netting young bears. They tend to rush out and kill the first they see. A lottery System would have allowed some rifle hunters.
Of course, we're only speaking about those hunters who follow the rules, there've been a couple bears killed by poachers this year already.

You mean if you had horns, hooves, and a humped back, you'd be protected at Wooleroc? I didn't realize they select which animals to protect, and bears aren't on the list.

It's nice that they have the reserve for some of the animals. Too bad they don't do that for bears, too. I thought they would want to keep the surroundings natural and allow all animals the freedom to roam....

Yes. It is fortunate that we have managed to keep these ice age animals, besides the buffalo, black bears were also here before the last ice age. There are still only a few thousand buffalo, maybe 10,000 while there are perhaps 450,000 black bears on the continent. Obviously buffalo need conservation but the lands have been fenced, free range is only a vague concept to many people that buffalo will never grow to the numbers seen in history. It was said they were in such number in the 1700's that it could look like the whole land was traveling with a herd covering the horizon ( ... )
