"If you're not with the drummer, you're wrong." - Jon Faddis, reminiscing from his days with Dizzie

Oct 12, 2004 19:25

So I was in my jazz class, already past when we usually go till...I turn my head to see who has moved in front of the fourth trumpet stand (we were missing our 4th player). And I'm like, "It's Jon Faddis," and I continue playing.

I look again.

"It's Jon Faddis!"

That's right, Jon Faddis, one of the top 10 trumpet players in all time, and the only remaining trumpet legend from the golden age of jazz. This is Jon Faddis, who was mentored by Dizzy Gilespie himself...The same Diz that said, "Jon is the best ever, even better than me."

After leaving a nice fresh load in my pants, he introduces himself to the band.

To tell you what happened in shorthand, I met/talked to/played with/joked with/ and I got WINKED AT(!) by Jon Faddis.

Only @ MSU do legends of jazz come in and teach you to play the instrument the way that it was meant to be played.

AHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

What a wonderful way to end the day.
