link-heavy lolita ponderation

So a while back I found this really awesome online clothing store that is primarily Lolita in nature. Some of it is more sort of 50s elegant, while most of it is your traditional lace doll ruffles and bows sort of thing. With some totally random and really awesome pieces that have little to no connection to either.

So here's my question: Is it possible to incorporate Lolita without looking twee? Because, let's face it, twee I am not. Or, alternatively, is there such a thing as Corporate Lolita?

This, for example, is completely adorable (in black, obvz). And lose the cape and it's all of a sudden real world reasonable. But how do you wear something like this anywhere but to a Christmas party without looking totally ridiculous?

And then there's the question of how much you can reasonably get away with in a conservative corporate (retail) environment. Is a pinstripe skirt inappropriate because it has buckles (and is by Lip Service)? Discounting the fact that the buckles on the back would probably be rather uncomfortable to sit down on, of course.

Irrelevantly, I also totally love this guy, and I think it would be pretty awesome with somebody from this sort of family. But maybe that makes me a cyber-poser. (Apologies to the cyber-purists, but I just can't hack the 4" foam platforms.) And maybe those of us who aren't typical goth toothpicks would look silly in it, I don't know. Either way this is clearly something for events like Kinetik, and not for, oh, let's say a day at the jewellery store. Or, in my universe, an ordinary day *not* at the jewellery store.

I still love my classic businessy stuff, don't get me wrong. But I'm bored with it at the same time (especially because very little of it fits anymore). I guess I want to be at least somewhat identifiable within my adopted subculture, without feeling like a poser, and without compromising my credibility at work. A lot of our clientele is over 50, and the company is very straight-laced, but I'm getting tired of blending in so completely.

Anyway, that's my story. I need to go to bed now.

PPS- Oh sweet Jesus!
