Who knew yoga could be stressful? Isn't that a contradiction in terms?
Well, it wasn't so much yoga as getting to yoga. I'd left really early so I could get to class w/ 20 min or so to spare and introduce myself/talk to the teacher about my back problems and such. I hopped on 395, ready to speed through the 15 minute ride to the studio in Annandale.
And then I hit the traffic.
It was insane. After 30 minutes on 395, I tried to cut over Seminary Road and take the back roads for an exit.
Except I don't know the back roads. And these backroads had even worse traffic than the highway.
After about seven unsuccessful phone calls to people I'd hoped would be near a computer/Google Maps, I finally found Little River Turnpike. At 7:30. My class started at 7:15.
So I've traded Monday fencing traffic for Monday yoga traffic.
I turned around to go home, and on the way remembered that the second-runner-up studio I'd looked at had an 8 p.m. Monday class. The location was actually closer to my house, but we had went with Annandale b/c it was a better time for Jen. So I decided to give Edge Yoga a try.
It has its ups and downs. I kind of like the teacher, but don't love her (though she was nice enough to talk to me about my back for about 10 minutes after class). The worst thing about it is the location. Not the distance - it's like a 4 minute walk from home. But it's one room in the second floor of a building that includes a bartending school and some sort of gym. It's loud, and almost feels just like taking classes at Gold's, rather than in some sort of serene environment. So I'm going to at least try to take Columbia Pike rather than 395 to the Annandale class next week; if I fail again, I'm either stuck with Edge, or need to look elsewhere.
But yoga's awesome. It was INCREDIBLY hard for me to do, and I'm certainly no natural. But it's really intense and enjoyable, and I can totally see it having a REALLY good impact on my back (speaking of such, I set up a doctor's appt. for Wednesday morning for my neck. I'm driving myself crazy Googling symptoms and coming up with things like "herniated disk", and I need to take care of this). I really hope to stick with it.
Now I just need to find the right place.
