“You’re amazing.”

Yoonjo traced a finger along the gold encrusted cover of her grandmother’s half century old spell book, nail digging into a worn corner as she turned up to look at her friend, a shy smile crossing her lips at his compliment.

“Me? Amazing? No way.” She gave a firm shake of her head, leaning forward to place the book gently against the surface of her night stand. It’d seen a lot of days - filled with happiness, anger, anticipation, sadness - and made it through each quite strongly but it was still pretty… ancient. She had no idea what would end up happening if she made a wrong move and dealt with it took harshly.

Kyungsoo sighed, standing up from the computer chair he’d been lounging on and making a move for Yoonjo’s bed, dropping onto the mattress next to her. “Yes way, you know I’d never lie to you.”

“But you have.”

He furrowed his eyebrows at her. “When?”

“About that answer on our chemistry quiz last week, and about your fructose allergy, and…”

“It’s called dietary fructose intolerance and that was when we were five, come on.”

“Still.”

“… Still, you’re pretty amazing.” Yoonjo gave a light roll of her eyes, leaning back against a mound of pillows resting against the headboard of her bed. “Do you even know what you did right there?”
“I did nothing, that’s what.”

“You made it rain… in your bedroom.”

Narrowing her eyes at Kyungsoo, Yoonjo sighed, rolling onto her side to get a better look at the small, wet circle smack dab in the center of her carpet. Turning back to look at him, “I wouldn’t call that impressive.”

“Yoonjo, you’ve… got to be kidding me right now.”

“Why?”

Scooting closer toward her, “We’ve been friends for how long…, two decades?”

“Not exactly, but roughly, sure.”

“Two decades, Yoonjo. I’m not going to be a total cheeseball and say something like I “know you better than you know yourself”, but… I know you better than you know yourself.” Yoonjo scoffed.

“Remember two years ago when you made your math textbook fly off of your desk after you failed our midterm? Or when we were fucking around and levitated spoons to kill time?”

“Okay.” Moving back into a seat position, Yoonjo aligned herself at Kyungsoo’s side, bumping her shoulder against his. “I get what you’re saying but it’s not like I’m doing anything that I have the right to scream about. It’s just… rain. My grandma used to do the most amazing things. She actually made an old pet rise from the dead once.”

Kyungsoo laughed. “And that’s your goal? To raise the dead?”

“No way in hell,” she gave a firm shake of her head as she faced Kyungsoo again, being met with a soft smile.

“You’ll get there someday.”

She frowned. “What if I don’t?”

“Well…,” Kyungsoo trailed off, drawing his hand up from his side to grab hold of hers, lacing their fingers together and giving a good squeeze for measure. “I won’t be able to say “I told you so”.”
