Day 19
Weight: 216
Thought for the Day: When in doubt, laugh at others who share your predicament

Rose handed me an LA-based magazine called Good. According to the cover line, Good is for people who give a damn. It's an entertaining magazine about things that matter. Find out more: www.goodmagazine.com ~ Basically, it's a lifestyle magazine for people yearning to make a statement but don't the over-busy urbanites and sub-urbanites who lead rudderless lives but feel better picking up a magazine and reading about other people making a difference. It makes ya feel good. I discovered that Rose's friend Cameron Sinclair is profiled in the issue, as he talks about his Architecture for Humanity, which looks at the role of architecture to solve social problems and provide community. Cameron is of good English stock and an interesting person to talk to. But I digress.

The reason Rose bought and gave me the magazine is an article about an editor at Cracked magazine who decided "in the interest of getting healthy and sparing a few dozen animals, to go 100 percent vegan for a full 30 days." Which of course means no meat, diary, fish, eggs, honey or anything else culled from something with a face or legs. The guy starts at 260 lbs and ends up 244 libs ~ not bad, however his sugar levels went up from 104 (just over healthy) to 125 (worse) due to eating lots of breads and pasta. This is a healthy lesson that although you can restrict your diet and take out the meats and dairy it is still wise to follow a balanced diet and reduce the portion side of each. His plight a funny read but certainly proves this is easier than originally people make out to be. (except for a choice few of you who eat so unhealthy I can't fathom you even approaching this diet). The story is littered with animal-loving "fun facts" such as the cramped conditions of egg-laying chickens and the life expectancy of diary cows (normally 20 years, but killed at 5 after best milk producing years behind them).

One time he talks about going to a vegan restaurant expecting "to find a den of dreadlocked hippies eating marijuana salads out of upside-down bongos. Shockingly that's not the case." I had the same thoughts about entering Zen Palette and Sacred Chou but the clientele was actually a normal mix or (I am guessing) fairly normal people ~ for New York standards that is. I have to say thought that no one in these restaurants is overweight or suffers from sweating at the slightest hint of heat. Maybe they are on to something.

Fun fact of my own: red wine is vegan and we have been having a glass with dinner each night (it also helps to add creativity to my writing and keeps the ranting to a minimum). So who says I have given up everything... slurp. Has anyone else been inspired to cut down on bad food or exercise more?
