Break time with Artemis & the Slumdog

Worked until 8:30pm tonight and then took a break: dinner and a movie with Artemis, who was just as interested in seeing SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE as I was. Beef portobelo tower, glass of merlot, and a few hours later...

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE is totally worth seeing. It could probably wait until DVD, but there's something cool about seeing India on a big screen; particularly after the Mumbai attacks, which hit some of the locations used in production. It is also a very handy reminder that if you go to India you better keep a close eye on your personal effects. Directed by Danny Boyle (MILLIONS, SUNSHINE, and 28 DAYS LATER) the movie tells the story of an impoverished kid (Jamal) from the slums of Mumbai who is one question away from winning the Indian version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" Trouble is, nobody believes a kid with no formal education could possibly get there honestly. The story tells of how Jamal went from living in a garbage dump to such an unlikely position.

There's more to it than that, of course, which makes it worth watching. I thought the film was well-written and engaging. You'll want to score the soundtrack, too, which is an energetic mix of Indian flavor and conveniently available on iTunes.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE started in limited release and continues to grow screens. If you're in a major market, it should be open near you. If you're interested in the award-season movies, this is one worth checking out. Otherwise, rent/Netflix it.
