Hope. It is the quintessential human delusion, simultaneously the source of your greatest strength and your greatest weakness.

- The Architect, THE MATRIX RELOADED

Things are cool. I just liked the line.

That was on HBO HD last night. I watched from the Escher-esque fight with the Merovingian henchmen all the way through the freeway chase. There are some great things in that movie. Its too bad they managed to fuck it all up simply by releasing number 3.

I came into it about the time the Key Maker briefed everyone about the building they had to infiltrate and watched through the end. I love The Architect's voice and his delivery on that line struck me as really cool.

I didn't think 2 or 3 were as strong as the first, but they do all have their moments.

I have to disagree about 3. It's a movie so bad that it made a movie already out almost unwatchable simply by existing. All the possibilities brought up by 2 are completely trivialized by 3. It turned sci-fi into fantasy. Neo is a magic user?!? WTF?!? Thats all they could come up with? I can buy that he's The One in the matrix, because its all in his head. But for them to make him supernatural in the real world quite simply ruined everything that came before. And then they compounded their mistake by having everything else suck too. Otherwise intelligent people acting stupidly. The humans were smart enough to get anti-grav to work for their ships but they don't bother to armor up their home defense mechs? Really? A little sheet metal was too much of a stretch? And what about EMP bursts? Frying your own electronics has to beat everyone getting slaughtered, doesn't it? Gah. Frankly, I don't think it has a single redeeming quality. It was so bad, I can't even watch the 2nd one anymore, with the exception of the fight ( ... )

Yeah, I wondered about that, too. There never really felt like a decent explanation as to why he could pop Sentinels with his mind at the end of 2. As I walked out of the theater after seeing the second movie, I wondered if they were going with a Matrix-within-a-Matrix concept for the third picture. The idea of Zion/Resistance being a part of a larger overall program could have been an interesting direction to explore.

I was really hoping for a matrix within matrix scenario, because I couldn't see any other way for it to make sense, and I wouldn't let myself believe they were stupid enough to say he was supernatural. Shows what I know. Maybe they just didn't want to rip off the plot from The Thirteenth Floor, a movie nobody actually bothered to see.

I think I've got that in my Netflix queue. Is it worth watching?

I kind of liked it, though it certainly has its issues. It isn't great, but its a decent whodunit with the virtual reality twist. It came out during that period when Hollywood was enamored with virtual reality so the market got saturated. Most of the movies were utter crap, and the few that were decent like this got lumped in with the rest.
