Stupid stuff about music and conventions

I am mad. People are pissing me off. Stop implying that our party was an SEMP. Really. That era has past. Most of the people playing at the party weren't around for most of those. Or alternately were shunned when they were happening because others didn't think them good enough or like their music. There are a couple of people still active from that time but they aren't the participants people are complaining about.

We wanted a music party with our friends and opened it up to the entire convention. We paid for it and did all the work (Thank You's should really go out to Laura Jean for the fabulous help). It was not convention sponsored, it was not a programming item. It was our personal thing.

If what you want is an open music party throw your own. Stop complaining about ours. You get what you want by doing things. We wanted this so we made it happen. I have a lot of respect for Chas in part because I know he has ideas about music at the con and will be working to bring some of them about. He strikes me as much more egalitarian than many people on this topic.

I like music. A whole bunch. Always have and always will. I fully expect my son to like music, including Filk, when he gets old enough to show a preference. I would like to see it have a home at SF cons for a long time. I think there's room for all kinds of circles. You just can't expect people to stop doing what they like with their time and energy because it's not your thing or you disagree. You just have to hope that there are other people like you who also like the same stuff and gather them together.

I'm pretty sure that's how these things started.
