A new year and new decade. I can hardly believe it was 10 years ago that Ben and I threw a fairly big bash at our house with our leftover ( untapped and held in cold storage) keg of wedding beer. Summer of 1999 when we had to store our untapped keg, we thought, "when the hell will we use this??" and then I shouted " Y2K!! We are having a huge party".
and we did.
The past ten years have seen huge changes in my life. I went from a 27 year old young thing feeling on top of the world to a bedraggled 37 year old mom of two who is slowly clawing her way back to feeling on top of the world.
in 2000 I drank like a fish and smoked pot for the first time ever. ( My excuse was "it's a new millienium why not") I stayed up all night long and went out to the Arboretum with friends while one friend read a poem in the dawn's light.
In 2010, I drank a little and went to my third performance of Macbeth, this time with Ben, and was home by 12:30, mostly sober but drunk on sleeplessness.
I feel unprepared to really even think about what I want out of the next year, next ten years. I can say that ten years ago if I was asked where I wanted to be in 10 years, I would agree with todays current reality. kids, home, impressed by last summer's tri, impressed but my biking, curious about my living in the suburbs, happy that I'm happy.
I guess in the next ten years, I hope for more arts and culture. More jocky stuff, a new turn professionally, and to feel some sense of good relationship/connectivity to the kids as they grow into teens.
In this next year? To learn about bikes. Find more fun things to do. go out more. work more.
