Yeah, they had Damon directly tell her to "calm down" right before they had him enact the 'sire bond' and she just kept being completely un-calm. So... yeah, either it's extremely finicky and precise in a bizarrely 'letter of the law' fashion or it's fake and Elena turned off her emotions because Damon's argument sounded good to her.
Nina knocked it out of the park tonight. She was amazing.
Sire bond same thingie -- Shane hypnotized Elena to follow direct Damon commands. They'll know it's fake when Damon tries to make her turn it back on, but by that time, Shane will probably be dead-dead, thus it won't work.
Anyhoo, that's my theory. I'm gonna rewatch the show tomorrow and take my time writing my post.
But again, from a practical perspective, how will they ever know it was fake if Shane is dead-dead? There needs to be someone -- an objective third party (like Elijah was in "Klaus") to reveal the "truth" and nobody else was in those scenes except Shane and Elena, right?

I don't understand why this wouldn't be the case. Whatever supernatural power created the sire bond probably didn't want it to be used willy-nilly. Don't most supernatural laws on this show have pretty narrow definitions? IDK...
(You totally want me arguing the sire bond is real! For NINE MONTHS, I incorrectly argued a character on another show wouldn't die. When I'm wrong, I'm REALLY WRONG. ;p )
It's just been way too inconsistent for me to buy it. Especially the stuff from before the 'reveal', like Elena not feeding on the blonde girl that Damon told her to feed on.
I've changed my mind, Shane just hypnotized her that one time. Elena turned the switch off because she wanted to do it. Later in the episode, Damon tells her "don't do it" about burning the house down. She burns it down.
We'll find out it's not real when Damon tells her to turn the switch back on and she doesn't. It's just too inconsistent.
The "sire bond" continues to make no sense. Damon tells Elena to calm down, she ignores him. He then offers her a lifeline to helping herself and couches it in terms of "this will make me happy" and she does it -- is this supposed to be proof? Because I am 10000% sure that Elena would have taken that lifeline whether or not a 'sire bond' was in place.
I really have no idea with this stupid thing anymore. I feel like maybe it was invented a) to give us Damon/Elena in the first place (even though it could have happened quite plausibly without it) and b) to give the writers the opportunity to explore switched off Elena (which, again, could have happened quite plausibly without it). If it's real (which this episode would suggest it is, AGAINST ALL LOGIC) then it's like the writer's need a reason for Elena to make decisions that make her a three dimensional character? It's like, "Elena can't be bad! She can't choose Damon! She can't switch off her humanity! There needs to be a plot device to do this."
I think the show is using it to literalize Stefan's PoV. The idea that Damon is corrupting/controlling Elena is the only way that Stefan can manage to explain to himself how Elena is able to react to Damon the way that she does, even though she was doing similar before she was a vampire. That's why we have Stefan and Caroline pinning "evidence" of the sire bond down to things that Elena has been doing with Damon anyway. The sire bond is the only way that the show can make Stefan slightly less of a complete asshole (and he's still coming across like a whole lot of one) while having him actually react in character to Damon and Elena being together

I hope everything you say in this comment comes to fruition, and looking back on it, you are completely right about that being the only time Damon asked Elena something she didn't want to do. She ~could~ just have wanted to turn it off in 4x15 and maybe the fact she didn't calm down when he told her to is a big neon sign that the sire bond is fake. I really hope this is what hapens.
